Vixen 101 Announces Plans to Reclaim World Record

Last year's record-breakers and (right) Paul Atkinson

East Yorkshire community station Vixen 101 is again planning to broadcast its way into the record books and try to reclaim the title for the longest continuous radio show.

Two presenters stayed on the air for 53 hours in 2011 at the station’s Market Weighton headquarters to raise money for station funds and to boost the profile of volunteer-run community radio. However, other radio stations quickly beat this achievement.

Now one of the original pair, Dave Henderson, is having another go. This time Dave is teaming up with Vixen 101 newcomer,  sports and soul music presenter Paul Atkinson, to broadcast for 80 hours! A number of corporate sponsors, led by Sheffield-based GRI Group, is pledging thousands of pounds to the station if the record can be broken again, as Vixen 101 becomes the first station to try to reclaim the spoils.

Vixen 101 is planning to stage the broadcasting marathon from 10am on Thursday 26th April to Sunday 29th April, with the launch overseen by the Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Cllr Kay West, who will also officially open the station’s new Studio 1, which has taken four years to fund and equip.

Community groups are being signed up to help with the time-consuming role of witnessing the marathon, in return for having a share of the sponsorship. They are being asked to provide at least two members for each hour to confirm that the broadcasters follow the rules.

Organiser Paul Atkinson says: “Although we did break the record last year, other radio stations quickly beat our achievement. It’s a huge task to stay on the air for 80 hours but this is a great challenge and we want to involve as many people as possible in the community. There are strict rules to observe though, as we need at least two witnesses every hour to confirm we completed the time. Naturally, we can play music and talk to guests.”

Businesses and individuals are welcome to support the marathon and help to raise funds by making a minimum donation of £10 per hour, which would include frequent mentions and requests played for them for their 60 minutes.

THE SEVENTIES Wednesday 8 -10 p.m.

So here’s a sample of what’s playing… The Jacksons sing a song by Mick Jackson, whilst Daryl and John’s theme is departure! There’s a 1970 keeping it in the family song about Montego Bay. Bryan Ferry works out the cost and Darts have already made up their mind, whilst Gerry is stuck with his former band.

From 9 until 10 o’clock it’s an airing of this Week’s Chart from 1974. Lots of goodies in that, starting with Terry and ending just before 10 with Olivia.

Happy listening!

Weekend Highlights

Saturday Theatre after 12 today will hear from Beverley’s Other Lives Productions about their plans next month for an East Riding tour of some original material, based on local memories. Director Richard Avery talks about the stories you can hear in their 11-venue tour starting 11th April. Also, York Musical Theatre Company look ahead to a special production of Titanic, and the  Yes Prime Minister tour comes to York.

Sunday – a special Sunday Brunch show will cover the opening ceremony of the church centre at St John’s Methodist in Market Weighton. It has taken thousands of pounds of fund-raising to bring the building, which was damaged by fire, back to use. Join Tony Barker and Bill Horncastle from 10.30am to noon.

Eastrington Open Gardens

The 2012 Eastrington Open Gardens Day will take place on Sunday 20 May.  The organisers are looking for up to 6 gardens of all shapes, sizes and descriptions whose owners would be willing to let the general public view them on the day of the event.

Your garden doesn’t need to be grand or super-tidy.  It could be your vegetable plots, relaxing patios, wildlife ponds, plant collections, formal beds, orchards, bee-friendly wildlife gardens and so on.

If your garden is unsuitable or unready for exhibition, you are very welcome to help run the event by making teas, sell programmes, marshall visitors, sell plants and offer advice to growers.

Eastrington Village Hall will be open throughout the day to sell programmes.  It is the H.Q. for plant and produce sales, parking, toilets and refreshments, but participating gardeners are welcome to do their own refreshments and plant sales if they prefer.

Admission to the event will be by programme and map; and all profits will be towards “Pretty Up Eastrington” projects.  Last year’s fundraising paid for the new village noticeboard, clearing the village pond and the purchase of a new waste bin.  Other projects include: construction of the village welcome signs; restocking the village green and part of the churchyard with perennial flowers and shrubs.

Contact Jane Irisa, Secretary of “Pretty Up Eastrington” by telephoning 07941 695893 or emailing pue@live.co.uk

A rarety play for The Byrds’ song planned for a rock musical. ELO’s Jeff Lynne guests on a T.Rex song in 1972. We’ll also hear Anne Murray’s personal favourite of her four Seventies releases, whilst a 1963 Ruby & The Romantics song gets a remake in 1974, but by whom?

For the 9-10 pm hour it’s this week’s Chart from 1976, and a great one for your enjoyment.

Unusual because it contains songs from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison( with Ringo playing on the recording) as individuals. Hmmm. Does that happen in any other Top 10? A challenge for you. Happy listening!
